International Day of Forests 2023: Forests and Health

Forests are an essential component of our planet’s survival as they offer clean air, freshwater, and habitat for a vast array of plant and animal species. Despite their immense value, forests are rapidly declining due to deforestation, climate change, and unsustainable land use practices, putting not only their existence at risk but also the survival of humanity. The International Day of Forests, observed annually on March 21st, is crucial as it raises awareness about the crucial role forests play in supporting life on earth and encourages action to protect them.

Did you know?

Several studies have proved that a visit to a forest environment lowers blood pressure and pulse rate, and reduces cortisol levels.

By marking the International Day of Forests, we show appreciation for these critical ecosystems and commit to their protection for the sake of our survival. These ecosystems offer various benefits, from carbon sequestration to biodiversity conservation, and promoting sustainable forest management practices is necessary to sustain them. The day’s celebration was established in 2012 by the United Nations General Assembly, and countries worldwide have been observing it ever since.

The Collaborative Partnership on Forests, a group of 14 international organizations promoting sustainable forest management, chooses the theme for the day each year. The day presents an opportunity to reflect on forests’ significance, educate the public on the importance of conservation, and take action toward preserving these natural treasures.

The Theme for International Day of Forests 2023

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the theme for 2023 is “Forests and health.” Forests provide numerous benefits to our health. They clean the air, filter the water, collect carbon to combat climate change, supply food and life-saving medications, and generally improve human well-being. It is our responsibility to protect these valuable natural resources. Because healthy forests produce healthy people, the year 2023 calls for giving rather than taking.

Why are our forests important and worth protecting?

Forests are essential for the health of our planet and its inhabitants. They provide us with a range of benefits, including:

  • Carbon Sequestration: Forests act as carbon sinks, absorbing and storing large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This makes them essential in mitigating the effects of climate change.
  • Biodiversity Conservation: Forests are home to a wide range of plant and animal species, estimated to be worth around $125 trillion according to a WWF report in 2018, many of which are endangered or threatened. Protecting forests is therefore essential to preserving biodiversity.

  • Soil, food production: Forests help to prevent soil erosion and maintain soil fertility, which is essential for agriculture. Our forests are responsible for feeding 1.5 billion people. A  study from 43 000 households across 27 countries in Africa found that the dietary diversity of children exposed to forests was at least 25% higher than that of children who were not
  • Water Conservation: Forests play an important role in regulating the water cycle by absorbing and releasing water. They also help to prevent floods and droughts.
  • Economic Benefits: Forests provide a range of economic benefits, including timber and non-timber forest products, tourism, and recreation. They are an invaluable source of natural resources that are used in every aspect of our daily lives.

Here’s how you can effectively celebrate International Day of Forests 2023

  • Plant a tree: Planting a tree is a simple yet powerful way to contribute to forest conservation and promote sustainable forest management. It can also be a fun and rewarding activity to do with friends and family.
International Day of Forests
  • Organize a community event: Organize a community event such as a nature walk or a tree planting day to raise awareness about the importance of forests and promote sustainable forest management practices. You can collaborate with local organizations and government agencies to plan and promote the event.
  • Support forest conservation organizations: There are many organizations dedicated to forest conservation and sustainable forest management. You can support their work by donating, volunteering your time, or participating in their campaigns and advocacy efforts.
  • Reduce your environmental footprint: By reducing your environmental footprint, you can help to minimize the negative impacts of human activities on forests and other natural resources. Some ways to do this include reducing your energy and water consumption, using sustainable products, and adopting eco-friendly transportation options.
  • Spread awareness: Share information about the importance of forests and sustainable forest management with your family, friends, and community. You can do this by using social media, organizing educational events, or simply talking to people about the issue.

Fund The Planet is protecting rainforests, and here’s how you can be a part of it!

Fund The Planet has taken on the challenge of protecting and conserving rainforests in the Peruvian Amazon by providing a sustainable alternative for rainforest owners in local communities who may be looking to sell their land for unsustainable environmental activities such as mining and deforestation. These local rainforest owners now have a sustainable option in the form of Fund The Planet, which compensates them and ensures the continued preservation of these lands from unsustainable activities by collaborating with local communities and legal systems.

All the aforementioned activities are supported simply by the acquisition of a Rainforest Token. Rainforest Tokens are rainforest real estate that ensures the continuous protection of rainforest areas while also serving as proof of positive impact and sustainability for everyone who wants to safeguard our rainforests. The International Day of Forests is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of forests and encourage sustainable forest management practices. We must guarantee that we maintain a harmonious and synergistic relationship with Mother Nature that will allow future generations to appreciate the beauty of our planet.
